Upcoming Band Concert

Last year, the band concerts were mainly a fun way to showcase our newly formed musical interest. In our seventh grade year, about half the band has dropped out, and we have a cropped version of last year's inflated band. The winter band concert is mainly just an update on our progress in band. We're doing three pieces where easy rhythms collide to create put together, holiday melodies.

In last year's concert, we had not yet been assigned chairs, and many had yet to discover their talents for their instruments and passion for music. However, it was around the time that I, for example, had started working hard and really practicing, and had started to evolve as a young musician. Even though I was within the top three trumpeters in my band class, which would make me at least twelfth chair in the concert. I was shoved to about the eighteenth chair or so, and so were many other first chair potentials. People who barely knew the instrument and rarely practiced were exhibited as the stereotypical sixth grade first chair, but had trouble squeaking second part out of their instruments. The same happened at the spring concert, and it shouldn't happen this year, as we have been assigned chairs based on ability and development as a musician.

Also, the concert music we played for our spring concert last year challenged our counting skills and our instrumentation. I'm hoping that this year, we'll start working on pieces with challenging rhythms and notes so that our band can reach it's full potential by spring. I think our musical foundations are still viable to be built, and it's important that early development is fully optimized.

Moolie, you have to remember that there are some beginners this year and that the pieces shouldn't be too difficult because we don't want people to end up in tears...

Yes, however, what that section is to be suggesting is that the band as a whole work harder at the pieces starting earlier on so that we can reach something greater than we may be striving for.

Okay, I agree, but be considerate for those beginners (:

If we start earlier, we can reach higher.

Too bad we can't start earlier for the winter concert, it's in a few weeks! Maybe those that are good at their instrument could help the beginners.

Yeah, but with a lot of practicing, the pieces can be pretty easily mastered. I do understand that you're a beginner, though. That just means that you have to work doubly hard.

But see, some of the beginners don't have the time / patience to work doubly hard and didn't ask for band.

There were many elective mishaps and it was really quite easy to get your schedule rearranged by guidance. If you don't have time, don't work at it, but I don't think that people who are unenthusiastic about band should hold the rest back. I hope that doesn't offend you, but there are many people who take a certain joy in practicing their instrument, and that would be most of the people who have stayed in band this year. Therefore, I think that the purpose of the band program is to shape and challenge people's musicianship, and if you don't want a part of it, please let the other band geeks have their fun. :)

Oh, I was offended, but that's not going to affect my attempted positive mood. Some of the beginner's parents were so pleased about them getting band that they went out and bought them instruments and told them to stick with it, not even considering that they don't have enough time. This is why some of the beginners want to switch schools (not for this sole reason though). And this is also why some of the beginners are going to stop responding to these comments and go on their blog and talk about it (:

I must say I agree with Moolie, though I can definitely see A's point of view.

A few things:

First, are you guys open to articles from 8th-graders? As I said earlier, I'd be happy to contribute to iStudents' revival, and I have some ideas for this and other pages.

Second, I don't know how much you guys have been advertizing iStudents, but I personally have not seen any posters, flyers, etc. I would highly recommend that you make and distribute these (if you've already made some and I've just not seen them, my appologies).

Finally, do you find it almost unbearably frustrating that All-County folders still haven't come in?

1. I replied on the home page inquiring mind.
2. We're not into the advertising stage yet, iStudents just 're-opened' about a week ago and we don't even have a complete team. Patience!
3. Didn't try out for All-County so... nope (:
