Upcoming Band Concert

Last year, the band concerts were mainly a fun way to showcase our newly formed musical interest. In our seventh grade year, about half the band has dropped out, and we have a cropped version of last year's inflated band. The winter band concert is mainly just an update on our progress in band. We're doing three pieces where easy rhythms collide to create put together, holiday melodies.

In last year's concert, we had not yet been assigned chairs, and many had yet to discover their talents for their instruments and passion for music. However, it was around the time that I, for example, had started working hard and really practicing, and had started to evolve as a young musician. Even though I was within the top three trumpeters in my band class, which would make me at least twelfth chair in the concert. I was shoved to about the eighteenth chair or so, and so were many other first chair potentials. People who barely knew the instrument and rarely practiced were exhibited as the stereotypical sixth grade first chair, but had trouble squeaking second part out of their instruments. The same happened at the spring concert, and it shouldn't happen this year, as we have been assigned chairs based on ability and development as a musician.

Also, the concert music we played for our spring concert last year challenged our counting skills and our instrumentation. I'm hoping that this year, we'll start working on pieces with challenging rhythms and notes so that our band can reach it's full potential by spring. I think our musical foundations are still viable to be built, and it's important that early development is fully optimized.

Random Ballet Tips

Hi! These tips are a collection of tips from my friends, dance teachers, and, me!
These tips might work for you dancers or not, it just depends your preferences!(Hopefully some dancers besides Sarah and Silly still read iStudents.)

Use paper towels instead of gel pads in your pointe shoes! They mold to your feet and apparently are really comfortable and they toughen up your toes!(I have not tried this.)
Do your pointe shoes always fall off your heels? Put water on the heel of your tights!
Do you hate having a flubby tummy in your leotard? Pull your tights up to your ribcage.(I personally detest this, because my tights end up falling back down to my waist and then I look funny;))
Wear a cute headband so that your hair doesn't fall in your face.
Pointe shoes are good for kicking obnoxious nutcrackers in the shins.
Never eat 2 slices of pizza, a cookie, a pepsi, and a slushie before going to dance class. I have tried this and it is not fun.
Bobby pins are good for throwing at obnoxious nutcrackers.
Annoy your fellow dancers about eating something besides salad for a change!
Never try to jump straight onto pointe. This hurts like crap.

Step Closer to the Super Bowl

Over the weekend, four NFL teams made a step closer to the Super Bowl. In case you missed the games, here is a sum up of each one.

Packers vs. Seahawks

The game started off grim for the Packers with two fumbles that were turned into Seattle touchdowns. Even with these fumbles, the Packers kept it on the snowy ground to tie it up after the first quarter. The rest of the game was all Packers. The final score: Green Bay:42 - Seattle:20.

New England vs. Jacksonville

Jacksonville was first on the board with a miraculous pass for a touchdown. The Patriots fought back to tie it up. Even though the Jaguars mostly kept it tied, New England dominated, and in the fourth quarter pulled away winning 31-20.

Colts vs. Chargers

This game came down to the wire and almost went the other way. LT was the first Charger to go with a bruised knee. The Rivers followed. Even with the back-ups in, the Chargers stole the show with late stops. In the end, the defending champions lost 24-28.

Dallas vs. New York

This game was back and forth, but the preoccupied Romo lost the game. With Jessica cheering on the Cowboys, they tried as hard as they could, but the younger Manning and the Giants prevailed. The Giants at their best help bring out one Manning to a Championship Game. The Giants won 21-17.

With those games in the books, it will be the Packers vs. Giants and Packers vs. Chargers. I think the superbowl will be Packers and Patriots with some amazing wins.

Cheerleading: Think it's Easy?

Do you still think cheerleading is a girly sport that anyone can do? Well, take a look at the videos on the sidebar. On the first video-slide thing, click on the first one. That's the dance us HMS cheerleaders are doing. I'd like to see you try it. The next slide thing has Junior Cheer Extreme girls and boys. These people are YOUNGER THAN US! Click on the first one. Watch it. I can't even do that. I don't think you'd be able to. Some of the people in that video are siblings of 8th graders at our school, just so you know.

Still think cheerleading is easy?

I wouldn't be so sure about that.

Cheerleading is a Sport?

Have you ever been asked if you thought Cheerleading is a sport or not? Well, if you have or in case you might, the correct answer to the question if Cheerleading is a sport is, yes, it is. I quote the definition of sport from dictionary.com. It says a sport is, "an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature," If you don't believe me clic k here. Yes it does say racing is a sport but it ain't. If racing took athletic activity our mom's and dad's that drive us every were would be so fit. I don't know your parents, but my mom takes about twenty minutes to walk a mile. Cheerleading no matter how girly and bizarre it is a sport. I have taken gymnastics and it was the hardest thing ever and Gymnastics and Cheerleading go hand and hand. Unless you are able to do some Gymnastics and vertical push ups you have no right to think Cheerleading isn't a sport.

Around the Horn

For those non-sports fans, therte is an amazing show called Around the Horn. It's where four famous sports casters compete in trying to create the best argument for the topic given. For those of you that might be intrigued, turn to channel 33 - or whatever it is for ESPN at your house - at 5:00pm Eastern Time, which for us HMSchoolers is just simply 5pm. Say that you want to turn the show on and it is 6ET and all you have to do is turn into ESPN News, and then you say, "I don't think I have that station!" This show is always heated. There is always Woody Page and Jay Mariotti. The other two guys rotate. Normal Micheal Smith is in all the action but sometimes he just can't do it. Over the five years that this show has been running, there have been a total of ten panelists. J.A. Adande, Jim Armstrong, Kevin Blackistone, Tim Cowlishaw, Jackie MacMullan, Jay Mariotti, Woody Paige, Bill Plaschke, Bob Ryan, and Michael Smith. There have been two hosts, Max Kellerman and Tony Reali; and two guest hosts, Zachariah Sewyn and Duke Castiglione. These men and woman have been a huge help and way of entertainment for us sports fans. In case you care or just want to know or just are bored, the stats so far are Jay Mariotti winning the most games because he has been on the show every game and Micheal Smith in second winning well over half of the ones he plays in. Woody is just flat out crazy and you have to love him. There are a few episodes that he makes it past rounds because of his funny outfits and giving ice cream to the other panelists and the host, he usually choses a nice colorful Popsicle. If you watch ESPN 2 in the morning when Mike and Mike, the Today Show, and other early morning casts are on he starts on Cold Pizza. Him and the boring old guy Skip, Skip will live for ever he can't die I have tried, never shut up about how the other one is wrong. Woody is always out there and says the funniest things. All in all Around the Horn is a game show were some of the best sport analysts come together to compete and get their message through.

Quaterbacks in History!

In the past few weeks Payton Manning, Tom Brady, and Brett Favre have beaten all 31 other NFL teams. These three quarterbacks are amazing and have plenty of talent. The oldest but most well known is Brett Favre. He has more then twenty awards with the majority of them being him in first. He has won two Super Bowls and may have one or two more victories before he retires. Brett Favre is number four for the Green bay Packers and has been on the team since he was traded in 1992 from the Atlanta Falcons. They only traded Brett Favre for a First round Draft pick! I have a feeling if they knew what he was to become they would have held onto him tight. Right now Brett Favre is 38 years old, for those of you that don't know football that is really really old, even though he is so old he has shown his amazing skills on the field. If you don't believe me click here. Pay attention to the white team not the blue and how in over time it only takes Brett sixteen seconds to win the game.
The next QB I will talk about is Tom Brady. Don't buy anything that says Brady Buchanan is as good as him or anything with other Bradys are good because of the name. Don't buy it because it is a bunch of crap. Tom Brady is very good, I do hate him and his team but it is only fare to give them the credit they deserve. Yes there is the whole controversy with the cheating and taping the other teams signals but that isn't everything. I quote from some former Coaches when asked if they cheated, "Well yeah we cheated, but everyone does. It is just the fact that the Patriots and Bill Belichick have won three Super Bowls and they have been warned about bringing video equipment into the locker room and on the sidelines." Tom Brady was from Michigan College and was not very well known or thought to be the next great thing but he did become it. Come on don't wast your breath arguing he was picked in the sixth round and was the 199th pick. There are only 255 picks so 199 is not something to brag about. On the other hand he has won 3 Super Bowls and that is huge. In my mind the greatest player ever is Brett Favre and he has only won two. He shows that no matter were you start you can always be the next greatest thing. He is 30 but does not look close to retiring. He has been in the league for seven years now so he is no rookie.
Lastly is my least favorite QB of all time. I hate him for many reasons. The main one is he is an older brother and being a youngest I have a biases. Also he was always the guy in my Madden that always wait till the last two seconds to snap. His computer character caused me to get in trouble seven times and have the game uninstalled from my computer twice. You may say that those are stupid reasons to hate him and it might be true but also have you ever thought about it and how when ever you get in a fight or the older sibling does something bad the youngest is to blame. If you really don't care about that then think of this. Eli Manning is Payton's younger brother when ever I turn on ESPN, which is ever time I watch TV, the reporters are talking about how Payton Manning is so good and that he is the best QB ever blah blah blah blah. They never really look at Eli an how he is carrying the Giants, if you don't know that Eli is the QB for the Giants you have never watched or listened to a football game that was before 2000. The Giants would be no were with out Eli after all he was the first round pick. First round picks are either the guy you always hear about because he is always asking for more money or the amazing player that goes on to greatness. Money seems to not be a factor with Eli so shouldn't we be expecting greatness? Now that I have finished telling you why I can't stand Payton I will tell you about his achievements. As you should know, I do mean should, Payton Manning has recently gotten two huge monkeys off his back. He beat the Patriots last year and he won the Super Bowl. I remember last year during the post season every sport commentator was talking about how Payton needs to get the monkey of a Super Bowl victory off his back but first he has to beat the Patriots. When he beat the Bears in the Super Bowl he was crowned with the honer of being the Super Bowl MVP. As he got to go to the White House and meet the President of the United States, by the way Stephen Colbert will be the next president. Winning the Super Bowl, meeting the president and many other prestigious football awards make Payton one of the three QB s to have beaten all other 31 NFL teams.
